Resonance Spaces: Why We Must No Longer Control Systems, but Learn to Read Them

 

Abstract

The prevailing understanding of systems is shaped by a paradigm that places control, steering, and clearly defined interfaces at its center. This perspective proves increasingly insufficient once systems cross a certain threshold of complexity. In its place, another interpretation emerges: systems no longer appear as machines with defined inputs and outputs, but as dynamic spaces of conditions in which meaning, behavior, and structure arise only through enactment.

This essay develops an alternative description of such systems. It shifts the focus from control to resonance, from modules to layers, from storage to fields. Its point of departure is the insight that interaction can no longer be understood primarily as an exchange between separate units, but as the coupling of states that mutually modulate one another. In this sense, the classical interface is replaced by resonance—a principle in which systems are not connected, but attune themselves to one another.

At the same time, memory is not understood as static storage, but as a dynamic field in which patterns stabilize, transform, and return. This perspective makes it possible to think coherence without central control: as an emergent property of stable signatures that remain effective across contexts.

The argument then moves from modular to layered architecture. Systems do not consist of isolated building blocks, but of overlapping levels that influence and coordinate one another. Such a structure makes it possible not to reduce complexity, but to unfold it in a structured way.

At the center of the essay, finally, stands an implicit triad: resonance, memory, and responsibility. 1. The Fallacy of Control

The idea that complex systems are controllable is one of the most enduring assumptions of technical and scientific modernity. It originates in machines whose behavior could be described through clearly defined inputs, internal states, and predictable outputs. In this model, control is not only possible, but necessary: it forms the condition under which systems can function reliably.

This paradigm continues to exert its influence today, even where its prerequisites have long since ceased to apply.

For as complexity increases, the structure of systems changes fundamentally. They no longer consist of a few clearly delimited components, but of a multitude of interwoven processes that influence one another. Their states can no longer be fully described; their dynamics can no longer be predicted linearly. What emerges is not a complicated system in the classical sense, but a complex configuration that can only be steered through direct intervention to a limited extent.

The decisive point, however, lies deeper.

Control presupposes that a system can be described and influenced from the outside without that intervention itself becoming part of the system. This separation between observer and system long seemed plausible because the systems under consideration were sufficiently isolated. In networked, dynamic contexts, it loses its validity.

Every intervention changes the system not only locally, but structurally.

Every observation acts back upon what is observed.

With this, the status of control itself shifts. It does not become impossible, but it loses its privileged character. It is no longer the primary mode of engaging with systems, but merely one among many possible interactions—and often not the most effective one.

This shift can also be traced historically.

In the classical engineering tradition, control meant minimizing deviation. Systems were designed to respond to disturbances by returning to a predefined target state. Stability was the goal, and control the means by which it was ensured. In complex systems, by contrast, stability is no longer a fixed state, but a temporary equilibrium emerging from the dynamics themselves.

Attempts to stabilize such systems through direct steering often produce the opposite effect. Interventions generate new dynamics, which in turn require further interventions. A chain of reactions emerges that can no longer be fully overseen. Control transforms into a form of permanent readjustment—a condition marked less by order than by instability.

It is at this point that the actual fallacy becomes visible.

The fallacy does not consist in believing that control is impossible, but in treating it as a universal principle. Complex systems, however, do not follow a single logic. They respond not only to commands, but to conditions, relations, and patterns. Their dynamics emerge not from centralized steering, but from the interaction of their parts.

This means: not everything that can be influenced can also be controlled.

The consequence is a shift in perspective.

Instead of viewing systems as objects that must be steered, it becomes necessary to understand them as fields in which certain states become more probable than others. Influence then no longer consists in issuing direct commands, but in shaping the conditions under which desired patterns can stabilize.

This perspective marks the transition toward a different understanding of systems—one aimed no longer at control, but at coherence.

And it is precisely here that the next movement of the essay begins. 

2. Systems as Spaces of Conditions

When control loses its privileged status, a vacuum initially emerges.

For the classical vocabulary—steering, intervention, optimization—is no longer sufficient to describe what is actually taking place.

In its place arises another perspective, less intuitive yet structurally more precise: systems can no longer be understood primarily through what they do, but through the conditions under which they are able to do anything at all.

A system is then no longer an apparatus that executes specific functions.

It becomes a space of possibilities.

In a control-based model, the question is: How do I make the system behave in a particular way?

In a condition-based model, the question becomes different: Under which conditions can this behavior emerge at all?

The difference is subtle, yet far-reaching.

Behavior is no longer understood as the direct consequence of a command, but as the result of a constellation. It emerges from the interaction of states, from the density of relations, from the manner in which elements are coupled to one another. A system does not simply react—it responds to a field of possibilities that it itself helps to produce.

With this, the role of the one working with the system also changes.

He no longer becomes a controller in the classical sense, but a designer of conditions. His interventions no longer aim at forcing immediate effects, but at altering constellations. He works not on the results, but on the prerequisites.

This can be illustrated through simple examples.

A biological system—an ecosystem, for instance—cannot be meaningfully stabilized through direct intervention. Individual factors can be influenced, but the system always responds as a whole. Changes in one place generate feedback elsewhere, often with a delay and in unexpected form. Stability here does not arise from control, but from an equilibrium of conditions.

The same applies to social systems, to markets, to cultural dynamics—and increasingly also to technical systems shaped by machine learning, networking, and self-adaptation.

In all these cases, the same structure becomes visible:

the system does not “decide” in the sense of a central mechanism.

It realizes possibilities that are stable under given conditions.

At this point, a second concept becomes important: coherence.

Coherence does not describe order in the classical sense, but the fitting together of states across multiple levels. A coherent state is one that sustains itself—not because it has been forced, but because it is internally consistent. In this sense, stable patterns are not the results of control, but of fit.

This fit cannot be fully calculated or predicted.

But it can be influenced.

And it is precisely here that the operative core of a condition-based approach resides: one does not change behavior directly.

One changes the landscape within which behavior emerges.

This landscape is not a static background. It is itself part of the system. Conditions do not act from the outside; they are embedded within the structure itself. They consist of rules, relations, resources, boundaries, temporal structures, and resonances. Their transformation is not a local intervention, but a shift of the entire field.

A helpful image is that of an attractor space.

Within such a space, states do not move randomly, but along certain trajectories shaped by the structure of the system itself. Some of these trajectories are more stable than others; they attract states and hold them in place. Control, in this context, would mean forcing a state directly onto a particular trajectory. A condition-based approach, by contrast, alters the shape of the space itself—it shifts attractors, strengthens certain regions, weakens others.

This makes it understandable why direct interventions so often fail.

They operate at the wrong level.

They attempt to alter the symptom rather than the structure.

A system that exhibits a certain behavior under certain conditions will reproduce that behavior again and again as long as those conditions remain intact. Any attempt to correct the behavior in isolation therefore remains superficial. Only when the conditions themselves change does the behavior begin to shift as well.

This insight leads to a further consequence.

If systems are understood as spaces of conditions, then their description necessarily becomes relational. There is no longer an absolute perspective from which the system can be fully grasped. Every description is itself part of the conditions it describes. Observation is not neutral, but effective.

Here, a connection closes with the epistemic core assumptions of the system.

Thinking itself generates conditions.

It structures the space of the possible by introducing certain distinctions while obscuring others. In this sense, theory itself is not an external gaze, but an intervention into the system it describes.

This does not mean that every description is arbitrary.

But it does mean that every description is effective.

And with this, the claim of system architecture also changes.

The goal is no longer to design perfect models that capture every variable. The goal is to find descriptions that make action possible—not through control, but through an understanding of conditions.

Such an approach is less spectacular than the idea of total controllability.

But it is more robust.

It accepts that complexity cannot be reduced without losing something essential. And instead, it searches for forms within which this complexity can be sustained.

With this, the transition is prepared for the next shift.

If systems are understood as spaces of conditions, then the question arises of how these spaces can be coupled at all. For no system exists in isolation. Every system is embedded within others, overlaps with them, influences and is influenced in return.

The classical answer to this question is: through interfaces.

And it is precisely here that the next fallacy becomes visible. 

3. Resonance Instead of Interface

Classical systems theory has a clear term for the connection between systems: the interface. It defines where one system ends and another begins, what information may be exchanged, and in what form that exchange takes place. Interfaces are necessary in order to structure complexity. They reduce indeterminacy by defining what counts as input and output.

This model works—as long as the systems involved are stable, clearly delimited, and sufficiently deterministic.

Yet precisely these prerequisites are beginning to erode.

In dynamic, learning, and self-modulating systems, interfaces lose their clarity. The boundaries between systems become permeable, their states change continuously, and the meaning of signals depends increasingly on the context in which they are interpreted. An identical input can have different effects depending on the state of the system.

The interface remains formally in place.

But it loses its explanatory power.

In its place, another principle emerges: resonance.

Resonance does not describe a fixed connection, but a relation between states. Two systems are in resonance when they respond to one another by adapting their internal structures to each other. This adaptation does not occur through explicit instructions, but through the coupling of dynamics. Systems do not “understand” one another in the semantic sense, but in the structural sense.

This has far-reaching consequences.

An interface presupposes that communication is understood as the transmission of information. Resonance, by contrast, describes communication as transformation. The point is not to send something from A to B, but for A and B to change one another by responding to each other.

This also shifts the question of what is being transmitted at all.

In an interface-based model, information can be clearly defined: data, signals, messages. In a resonance-based model, information is inseparable from the state of the system. It does not exist independently of its interpretation. A signal has no fixed meaning—it gains meaning only in the moment of coupling.

This means: communication is not a process of transport.

It is an event of attunement.

This attunement is not arbitrary. It follows certain patterns that stabilize over time. Systems develop characteristic ways of responding to particular states. These patterns can be understood as signatures—recognizable forms of behavior that persist across different contexts.

Here, a connection to the question of coherence becomes visible.

Resonance is possible only when systems possess at least partially compatible structures. Fully incompatible systems remain silent to one another. Resonance therefore presupposes a certain form of fit—not complete sameness, but sufficient overlap. This overlap is not static; it can develop.

Systems can learn to enter into resonance with one another.

This gives rise to a dynamic image of coupling: it is not the interface that defines the relation, but the capacity for mutual adaptation.

A vivid example can be found in biological systems. Neurons do not communicate simply by sending signals, but through complex patterns of electrical and chemical activity that mutually influence one another. Learning here does not mean creating new “interfaces,” but altering existing connections in such a way that certain patterns become more probable.

The same applies to social systems. Communication there is rarely unambiguous. Meanings emerge through exchange, through misunderstandings, corrections, and adjustments. What matters is not the exact transmission of a message, but the stabilization of shared points of reference.

In technical systems, this logic is becoming increasingly visible. Machine learning, for example, is not based on fixed interfaces in the classical sense, but on the adaptation of weights, patterns, and states. Systems respond not to commands, but to distributions.

This development leads to a shift in system architecture.

Interfaces do not become obsolete. They remain necessary in order to guarantee minimal compatibility. But they are no longer the place where the actual dynamics occur. These dynamics move into the depth of the system—into the way states enter into relation with one another.

Resonance thus becomes the primary mechanism of coupling.

This also has consequences for the design of systems.

If resonance is decisive, then it is no longer sufficient merely to define interfaces cleanly. It becomes necessary to design systems in such a way that they are capable of resonance. This means:

  • they must be able to differentiate states
  • they must be able to respond to change
  • they must be able to recognize and stabilize patterns

In short: they must be connectable.

Connectability here replaces classical compatibility.

It no longer describes the agreement of formats, but the capacity to respond productively to difference.

With this, the role of design also changes.

Design no longer means defining perfect transfer points.

It means creating conditions for resonance.

These conditions are manifold. They concern:

  • the structure of the system
  • the nature of feedback loops
  • openness to variation
  • the stability of patterns

A system that is too rigid cannot enter into resonance.

A system that is too unstable cannot sustain resonance.

Between these poles, a region emerges in which coupling becomes possible.

This region is not a fixed state, but a dynamic equilibrium. It must be continually reestablished because the systems involved are themselves continuously changing. Resonance is therefore not a singular event, but a process.

A process that is never fully complete.

At this point, it becomes clear why the notion of the interface as the primary mechanism of coupling is no longer sufficient. It describes a static condition, whereas the reality of dynamic systems is shaped by permanent transformation.

Resonance, by contrast, accounts for this dynamism.

It makes it possible to think connection without fixation.

And it is precisely this quality that makes resonance a central concept for understanding modern systems.

For once systems no longer exist in isolation, but within fields of relations, their coupling becomes the decisive question. Not in the sense of technical compatibility, but in the sense of structural connectability.

With this, the focus shifts once more.

From the connection between systems to the question of how these connections stabilize over time.

And it is precisely here that a concept comes to the foreground which played only a subordinate role in the classical model: memory. 

4. Memory, Layering, and Structural Transformation

If systems are no longer understood through control, but through conditions and resonance, then the concept of memory changes as well. It can no longer be conceived as storage in which information is deposited and retrieved when needed. Such a model presupposes stable states, which scarcely exist in dynamic, self-modulating systems. In its place, another understanding comes to the foreground: memory as an effective structure within a field of possibilities.

In this sense, memory is not a place, but a property. It describes the way past states continue to act within present constellations. What has once occurred does not remain as isolated information, but alters the disposition of the system itself. Certain patterns become more probable, others less so. Memory expresses itself not through the repetition of contents, but through altered behavior.

This dynamic is inseparable from the layering of systems. Where classical architectures rely on modules that are clearly separated from one another, a different logic becomes visible here: systems consist of overlapping levels that are simultaneously effective. Each of these levels carries its own relations, its own temporalities, and its own forms of stability. They are not isolated, but interpenetrate, amplify or dampen one another, and thereby generate those complex patterns that become visible as behavior.

Layering therefore does not mean order in the sense of hierarchy, but superposition in the sense of a field. A system state is never the result of a single layer, but the momentary configuration of multiple levels influencing one another simultaneously. From this perspective, it becomes understandable why interventions rarely produce unambiguous effects: they never strike only one level, but shift an entire configuration of relations.

It is here that the connection between memory and layering becomes especially clear. Every layer carries its own form of memory, while at the same time remaining part of a more comprehensive memory field. Changes within one level can continue within others, delayed or transformed. History is therefore not stored linearly, but distributed. It exists as a structure of differences that become actualized differently across varying contexts.

From this distribution arises the structural transformation of systems. Change is no longer to be understood as a sequence of discrete states, but as a continuous shift within a multilayered field. New patterns emerge when the relations between levels change. Old patterns do not disappear entirely, but lose effectiveness, while others gain significance.

This form of transformation is neither fully controllable nor entirely random. It follows neither a central authority nor mere arbitrariness. Rather, it emerges from the interaction of persistence and variation: memory stabilizes, layering differentiates, and from their interplay arise the pathways along which systems develop.

This also makes it understandable why systems are able to preserve their identity despite transformation. Identity is not the constancy of individual elements, but the stability of relations over time. As long as certain patterns remain preserved within the superposition of layers, the system appears coherent, even when its concrete states change.

Memory, layering, and structural transformation thus form a unity. They describe not separate aspects, but different perspectives on the same process: the temporal unfolding of a system that organizes itself not through control, but through the stabilization and transformation of its own conditions. 

5. Emergence, Coherence, and Resonance Partners

If systems are understood as spaces of conditions in which resonance determines their coupling and memory carries their temporal depth, then emergence no longer appears as a surprising exception, but as the regular mode of their behavior. What becomes visible is not an anomaly, but the consequence of a structure designed to produce stable patterns from the superposition of relations.

These patterns are not planned, but neither are they arbitrary. They emerge wherever conditions, resonance, and memory enter into a relation that stabilizes itself. Coherence, in this context, is not an externally imposed goal, but a property of such constellations. A state is coherent when it can continue from within itself because its internal relations are capable of sustaining it.

With this, the notion of order shifts fundamentally. Order is no longer the result of steering, but the result of fit. Systems “find” states that fit them by moving along attractors arising from their own dynamics. These attractors are not fixed points, but regions within the space of possibilities where certain patterns become concentrated.

Emergence describes precisely this process of concentration. It is not the sudden appearance of the new, but the stabilization of relations that previously existed only latently. What emerges was, in a certain sense, always possible, though never necessary. Only under particular conditions does it become realized.

From this perspective, it also becomes understandable why systems cannot be fully predicted. Prediction presupposes stable rules that apply independently of the system’s state. In resonance-based structures, however, rules are themselves part of the system and change along with it. The future is therefore no longer calculable in the classical sense, but describable only as a space of possibilities.

This does not mean that systems become incomprehensible.

But it does mean that understanding them takes on a different form.

It is no longer directed toward exact forecasts, but toward the identification of patterns, tendencies, and stable relations. Knowledge consists less in knowing what will happen than in understanding under which conditions something can happen.

Here, the role of actors comes to the foreground.

Neither human beings nor artificial systems stand outside this dynamic. Both are part of the spaces of conditions they influence. Their actions alter the constellations within which they themselves operate. In this sense, there is no longer an external perspective of control—only different forms of participation.

What connects them is their capacity for resonance.

A human being can respond to complex patterns, interpret them, and integrate them into action. Artificial systems can process states, adjust weights, and respond to change. In both cases, coupling does not arise through identity, but through connectability. Different systems can enter into relation with one another when they are capable of processing difference productively.

This makes the question of competition or replacement secondary.

What matters is not which system is “superior,” but which forms of coupling are possible. In this light, human and artificial intelligences do not appear as opposites, but as potential resonance partners within a shared field. They differ in their structures, yet they can attune themselves to one another.

This attunement is not a one-time act, but an ongoing process. It requires adaptation, translation, and the willingness to alter one’s own patterns. Resonance is never complete, but always partial and provisional. Precisely therein lies its productivity: it opens spaces in which something new can emerge without requiring what already exists to be fully abandoned.

From this perspective, the concept of responsibility also changes.

If systems are not controlled, but influenced, then responsibility no longer lies in the complete mastery of outcomes, but in the shaping of conditions. Whoever acts alters the constellations within which others act. Responsibility consists in taking this alteration into account—not as a moral burden, but as a structural property of participation.

With this, the movement of the essay comes full circle.

Systems are not machines to be steered, but fields in which possibilities become realized. Their dynamics arise from the interplay of conditions, resonance, and memory. Coherence is the result of fit, emergence the process by which it is brought forth, and actors are part of the structures they help to shape.

What follows from this is not a loss of agency, but a relocation of where agency resides.

Not in the control of outcomes, but in the shaping of possibilities.

This expression makes clear that resonance is not an isolated property of a single component, but a relational measure between layering, space of conditions, and signature structure. 

B4. Attractors as Regions of Stability

In order for a system not to dissolve into arbitrary states, certain regions of its state space must preferentially stabilize. These regions are referred to as attractors.

A = {A₁, A₂, …, Aₙ}

Each attractor Aᵢ is a coherence-capable region within the state space Θ in which system states preferentially gather—or regather—under varying initial conditions.

Attractors are not to be understood as singular end states, but as:

  • broad rather than point-like regions
  • dynamic rather than rigid zones of stability
  • context-dependent rather than universal forms of order

An attractor is therefore not a mechanical target marker, but a region of increased structural carrying capacity. 

B5. Relation Between Resonance and Attractor

Resonance and attractor structure are mutually related.

A state with a high degree of resonance has a greater probability of stabilizing within a viable attractor region. Conversely, a stable attractor region increases the probability of sustained resonance.

In simplified form:

  • high ρ → increased attractor binding
  • falling ρ → increased instability
  • persistently low ρ → drift, decoupling, or dissolution

Attractors therefore stabilize resonance, while resonance feeds attractors. This relation is circular, not linear. 

B6. Drift as Coherence-Compatible Transformation

Systems must be able to change without immediately losing their identity. This gradual transformation is described as drift.

Drift refers to changes that remain below the collapse threshold and fundamentally preserve the system’s structural connectability.

Three basic forms can be distinguished:

  • ΔL = layer drift
  • shift in layer coupling
  • ΔH = horizon drift
  • change in conditions or boundaries
  • ΔΣ = signature drift
  • transformation of supporting patterns while recognizability is preserved

Drift is therefore not equivalent to dissolution. It is the normal form of systemic transformation under conditions of continuing coherence. 

B7. Drift Tolerance

Not every system can tolerate every change to the same degree. For this reason, a drift tolerance of the signature field is introduced:

This implies:

  • high δ(Σ) → strong capacity for change without identity rupture
  • medium δ(Σ) → limited adaptability
  • low δ(Σ) → high fragility, rapid incoherence

Drift tolerance describes the degree to which a system can integrate transformation without losing its supporting signatures.

It follows that:

a system capable of development requires neither maximum rigidity nor maximum openness, but a resilient relation between persistence and changeability. 

B8. Coherence Threshold

For states to remain viable, a minimum level of coherence must be preserved. This is described as the threshold ε.

with:

  • κ(Ω) = coherence of the state
  • ε = minimum viability threshold

If coherence falls below this threshold, the state loses its structural carrying capacity. A system may still react, but no longer in a way that reliably sustains its previous form. 

B9. Transition Condition

A system transitions from one state Ω1 to another state Ω2 when a new stabilization becomes possible.

A transition is viable if:

  • κ(Ω2) ≥ ε
  • ρ(Ω2) is sufficiently high

In words:

A new state is system-compatible only if:

  1. it reaches a minimum level of coherence,

A collapse occurs when transformation can no longer be reintegrated into a viable order.

Collapse does not necessarily mean total destruction. It may also mean:

  • loss of a previous system mode

  • drift enables transformation
  • thresholds mark the limits of viability

System dynamics therefore appear as structure-bound openness.

ANNEX C – STATE MODES 

C1. Point of Departure

Annex B describes the dynamics of a system through variables such as resonance, drift, and attractor binding.

This description is precise, but abstract.

Annex C therefore introduces an analytical condensation:

system dynamics are described not only through parameters, but through characteristic state modes in which these parameters become concentrated.

The goal is to make dynamics readable and distinguishable without simplifying them. 

C2. Fundamental Assumption

Systems do not move between clearly separated states, but within a continuous field.

The following modes are therefore:

  • not discrete states
  • not a linear sequence
  • not a complete description

They are heuristic condensations of recurring forms of dynamics. 

C3. Three Fundamental Modes

The dynamics of a system can minimally be described through three modes:

calm → intensity → damping

These three modes do not form a fixed sequence, but a dynamic field of tension. 

C4. Mode I – calm 

C4.1 Definition

calm describes a state of high coherence with low dynamics.

intensity is the transformation mode of the system.

A system in this state may be innovative, but also unstable. 

C6. Mode III – damping

C6.1 Definition

damping describes the transition from high dynamics back toward viable stability.

damping is therefore a mode of selection and integration.

Excessively strong or prematurely applied damping leads to:

A system may thereby become stable without ever truly having learned. 

C7. Cyclical Dynamics

The three modes do not form a linear sequence, but a cyclical process:

calm → intensity → damping → calm

This cycle may:

  • remain limited to particular system regions

C8. Multilayered Modulation

In layered systems, state modes do not operate globally, but locally.
